MSBA, HCBA, and RCBA Statement on Shooting of Two Minnesota Lawmakers

June 16, 2025 — We are heartbroken and horrified by the senseless attacks against two Minnesota lawmakers and their families last week. This kind of violence against public servants has no place in our society.

Melissa Hortman, who was killed along with her husband Mark Hortman, was a powerful and principled leader whose work in the Minnesota Legislature shaped the future of our state in countless ways. Her legacy—especially her commitment to justice, equity, and public service—will be felt for generations to come.

We are also holding Senator John Hoffman and his wife in our thoughts as they recover. We wish them strength and healing in the days ahead.

This is a devastating moment for Minnesota. Together we recommit ourselves to the rule of law, civil discourse, and to building a society where violence has no place in public life.
