As President of the Ramsey County Bar Association, I am deeply concerned about the manner in which recent ICE enforcement actions are being carried out in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Immigration is a complex and challenging issue, and reasonable people may differ on policy approaches. At the same time, enforcement actions, like all exercises of governmental authority, must be conducted in a manner consistent with the rule of law, due process, and respect for constitutional protections.
When government action creates uncertainty or fear within communities, particularly among children and families, it risks undermining public confidence in the justice system and the institutions charged with administering it. It is important that the exercise of governmental authority be carried out with transparency, accountability, and care, especially where such actions may affect access to education and other fundamental aspects of daily life.
I support efforts by state leaders to ensure that enforcement activities conducted in Minnesota uphold constitutional principles, protect community safety, and reflect our shared commitment to fairness, due process, and the rule of law.
