2026 1L Diversity Clerkship Employer StatementJuvenile and Criminal Law
We provide an initial three day training as part of our on-boarding process for all summer clerks. In addition, there is ongoing training throughout the 12 week program.
Our entire practice centers around providing legal services for those who cannot afford to hire a private attorney.
Hennepin County as an employer is committed in its support of an inclusive work environment. While there are county wide programs and support, there is nothing specific within the Public Defenders Office.
Law clerks work hand in hand with experienced criminal defense attorneys on misdemeanor, felony, juvenile, child protection and appellate cases. They complete research and writing projects including motions and memoranda to be filed in court. Law clerks are also given the opportunity to observe and participate in client interviews and case strategy meetings. Those with student practice certification may argue motions they have written and may assist lawyers at bail hearings, evidentiary hearings, sentencing hearings, or trials.
Summer law clerks are invited to attend public defender trainings and field trips throughout the summer.
The Public Defenders Office is looking for people who are bright, enthusiastic, and interested in finding new ways to challenge the status quo.
$25/ hour for the 12 week full-time program ($12000 total).
