One of the privileges of “senior” status is sharing one’s “wisdom” with up-and-coming lawyers. It’s even better when they want to listen.
It turns out that many do.
Since the Senior Lawyers and Judges Section of the MSBA was formed, one goal of the section has been to develop a way to support the lawyers in the section who are mentors to newer lawyers. That’s why the section, for the second year, now seeks nominations for its annual mentoring award.
The section requests that individuals, bar and affinity groups, and public and private legal employers of all sizes nominate candidates who have demonstrated skill and dedication as mentors.
Some (but certainly not all) of the qualities that the Section has identified as associated with effective mentoring are:
Accessibility Patience
Emotional Intelligence Proactive Engagement
Empathy Trustworthiness
Expertise Unimpeachable Ethics
Experience Responsiveness
Ability to listen without judgment Wisdom
Nominations should include a maximum of 1,000 words; a brief description of the nominee’s work and professional background, and a detailed statement of the reasons you believe the nominee deserves to be recognized as an outstanding mentor.
Feel free to include comments from those who have benefited directly from the mentoring of the nominee.
PLEASE SUBMIT NOMINATIONS FOR THE MENTORING AWARD BY 7/25/2025.
Submit nominations to Siobhan Hwang MSBA/HCBA/RCBA Section Programs manager, shwang@ mnbars.org.
The Senior Lawyers and Judges Section looks forward to the presentation of the Annual 2025 Mentoring Award. The recipients in 2024 were Brian Johnson and Larry McDonough, whom we thank and recognize again.
