This session will explore the important role of civility in the practice of law and advancing civility through mentoring. Civility amongst counsel is paramount in our increasingly adversarial litigation practice, and it is critical that counsel maintain decorum and general “manners” while still representing clients zealously. Emphasis will be placed in discussing the mentoring of young lawyers to maintain and advance civility in our Minnesota practice community. 

As lawyers, our duties under the Rules of Professional Conduct underpin our service to clients. We are accustomed to quiet withdrawals, transfers of representation, and serving clients well, even when clients are at their most difficult.  We work in the midst of looming deadlines, mountains of cases, negativity, and other stressful conditions. Our duties as advocates frequently put us in the line of fire with difficult parties and opposing counsel, while requiring us to maintain the integrity of the profession and respect the rights of others.  Learn how stress, negativity, and ethical duties interact and how we can better manage our practice, our lives, and our ethical obligations.

It’s not enough to aim for increased diversity. Organizations only fully realize the benefits of their diversity when they are inclusive. When members feel included, they’re more engaged. And higher engagement has an effect on efficiency, morale, and retention. People working in inclusive groups also tend to have better physical and mental health. This engaging and energizing presentation discusses ways to create an environment where curiosity about differences is encouraged and inclusion is the responsibility of everyone. And this presentation discusses the latest research on HOW to ensure that your organization is inclusive, including practical advice for running inclusive meetings, giving non-biased feedback, and hosting inclusive events.   

This program will explore why the legal profession is the least diverse. It will foster a discussion as to why the legal profession in particular may struggle with unconscious bias. Why does it matter? Research on jury verdicts as well as diversity on the bench and its affect on perceived legitimacy of the legal profession as a whole is impacted.

Panelists from three tribes will share how tribal governments are advancing environmental law, policy, and regulation across the state. This panel will provide participants with a window into tribal approaches to environmental regulation and law, including the passage of tribal law, engagement with state and federal agencies, and how tribes implement, exercise, and protect treaty rights through the administrative and judicial system.

Imposter syndrome—that nagging feeling of self-doubt in one's abilities and accomplishments compared with others—is a common experience for young attorneys.  Join the Civil Litigation Section for an open, honest conversation with three attorneys at various stages of their practice, who will discuss their own experiences with imposter syndrome and their strategies for managing imposter syndrome in a legal practice.  Chase Anderson from LCL will provide his mental health expertise and provide resources to help manage your feelings of imposter syndrome and where you can reach out for help.
