Summary

This annual CLE focuses on current and emerging issues related to long-term care, particularly for our aging population and those living with disabilities, whether living in their own home or in a facility setting.  The topics are those of interest to Elder Law attorneys and related professionals as well as the clients they serve.  The CLE will consist of an update from the Minnesota Department of Health (“MDH”), the Minnesota Department of Human Services (“MDHS”), and Start Senior Solutions, with each sharing their perspectives of emerging issues in long-term care, moderated by Suzanne Scheller, Esq.
Attendees of Emerging Issues in Long-Term Care will receive information on recent federal legislation affecting those receiving waivered services in addition to state legislation that has been proposed to address efficiencies when providing waivered services, to comply with new federal law, and to combat concerns of fraud .  The Minnesota Department of Health continues to respond to the growing need for long-term care services and the quality of services performed.  Given the need, Start Senior Solutions has emerged as a non-profit to assist residents and families in navigating long-term care.
Topics covered in the CLE include:  1) DHS priorities in light of new federal legislation; 2) Proposals to address concerns of fraud; 3) Possible upcoming changes to processes involving waiver eligibility and services; 4) Impact of new federal legislation on long-term care providers statewide; 5) Discussion on maltreatment investigations and reporting; 6) Current trends in assisted living and nursing home ownership; 7) Tips and resources for navigating care concerns in long-term care; and 8) What to prioritize when seeking and working with facilities to provide care and services for loved ones.  We are grateful to MDH, MDHS, and Start Senior Solutions for addressing these important issues, as well as what to expect in the future.

Note: due to a conflict at the time of the CLE yet the importance of receiving MDHS insight at this time, the panelist from MDHS will present via pre-taped video and not live.  We are grateful for their willingness to participate.
This CLE sponsored by the Elder Law Section will address these topics to help elder law attorneys, professionals, and family members navigate legal concerns on behalf of older and vulnerable adults.
