Summary

Since 1983 the Minnesota Legislature has decreed that the personal property exemptions  in Minn. Stat. 550 .37 be indexed for inflation. In 2007, the homestead exemption was added to the list of exemptions being increased over time for inflation. The Commerce Department has been in charge of calculating those increases. To see how well they’ve done, this presentation will introduce the bankruptcy section to a new game show, “How Much is That Exemption?” Come and learn about how confusing the past 40 years of inflation adjusting has been and discuss what might be done about it. Attendees will receive a copy of Edstrom’s article of the same name. The Bankruptcy Section will hold a brief business meeting at 12:00 pm, followed immediately by the CLE presentation.
