Summary

Join us for a CLE program that will examine the high-profile Supreme Court case United States v. Skrmetti, which challenged Tennessee Senate Bill 1 (SB1)—a law banning gender-affirming medical care for minors, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy. The United States argued that SB1 violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment by targeting transgender youth and restricting medical care based on gender identity, while also raising significant questions about the rights of parents to make medical decisions for their children.

Oral arguments were heard by the Court in December 2024 and a decision was made on June 18, 2025. This session will analyze the key constitutional issues that were at stake, including the appropriate standard of review for laws affecting transgender individuals and the broader implications of the ruling for similar laws nationwide. Presenters will also provide insight into the issues, why these (and other similar cases) matter, and what you can do if you care about these issues.
