Senior Financial Exploitation

Financial exploitation of elderly individuals in the US costs $28.3 Billion per year.  Elderly individuals are more susceptible to being financially abused or being the victims of scams and fraud, in part, because of the normal aging process of the brain which impacts a person’s ability to understand and evaluate information in order to make an optimal choice.  Senior Financial Fraud Investigator Lisa Lovering will provide participants with information on what contributes to financial exploitation, what some of the common scams are, and how practitioners can help their elderly clients recognize and respond to scams and financial exploitation.  She will also provide an overview of Minnesota statutes aimed at protecting seniors and what the MN Department of Commerce does to investigate claims and utilize other resources to help senior victims.
