The area of mental health law is a burgeoning practice area that encompasses both civil and criminal law. To accommodate practitioners in this area of the law, as well as the clients they serve, the bar associations recently added a new Mental Health Law Section.

This roundtable-style CLE is designed for attorneys representing respondents in guardianship, conservatorship, civil commitment, and other protective proceedings. The session will focus on the practical resources, tools, and supports available to respondent’s counsel as they navigate these complex and sensitive matters.

Participants will engage in a guided discussion about resources ranging from practice aids, forms, and statutory references to professional support networks, social service agencies, and community programs that can assist clients. Ethical and strategic considerations in using these resources to effectively protect client rights and promote client-centered advocacy will also be explored.

The roundtable format encourages participants to share their own experiences and resource recommendations, creating a collaborative learning environment. Attendees will leave with a stronger toolkit for representing respondents and a clearer understanding of where to find support in their practice.
