This Elimination of Bias CLE examines a community-based women’s group that serves as a support system and network for justice-impacted women, including those who are formerly incarcerated, living in sober housing, awaiting sentencing, or seeking peer support. At its peak, the program has served approximately 80 women each week and brings together participants, family members, and justice partners in a consistent, structured setting.

The group centers on shared meals, facilitated conversation, occasional guest speakers, and—most importantly—meaningful interaction with justice system stakeholders, including judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys. Supported by Ramsey County Community Corrections, the program operates in a dedicated space and incorporates trauma-informed practices, including the Seeking Safety curriculum, to encourage positive behavior change and stability. Mothers and family members often participate, highlighting the broader impact justice involvement has on families and communities.

Panelists—including Ramsey County judges, a prosecutor, and a justice-impacted participant—will discuss how sustained community engagement exposes barriers faced by justice-impacted women, many of which stem from implicit bias, limited resources, and systemic inequities. The program will explore how hearing directly from impacted individuals can challenge assumptions, broaden professional perspectives, and inform more equitable decision-making within the criminal justice system.
This CLE also addresses how attorneys and judicial officers can engage with community-based initiatives ethically and effectively, while maintaining professional boundaries. Attendees will leave with practical insight into how diverse perspectives, mentorship, and collaboration across roles can reduce bias and strengthen trust in the justice system.
