Summary

In the wake of Operation Metro Surge, Metro Minnesota is experiencing a severe housing crisis, with many immigrant households facing mass rent delinquencies and the threat of eviction. Housing court filings in Ramsey County are rising significantly, and a growing number of litigants are navigating the process without legal representation.
This timely CLE will equip attorneys with the practical tools needed to represent tenants in housing court and to step into meaningful pro bono service. First, Judge Sheu will share the court’s perspective on the critical role attorneys play in ensuring fairness and efficiency in these proceedings, along with insights into what the bench looks for from counsel appearing in housing matters. In addition, a panel of experienced practitioners from local civil legal aid providers will walk you through the basics of eviction defense, courtroom procedure, common defenses and negotiation strategies, and how to effectively prepare for a housing court appearance.
Attendees will be encouraged to commit to taking one housing court shift per month to help meet this urgent need. Participants will also receive Zoom links to observe proceedings in advance, offering an opportunity to become familiar with the process before stepping into representation.
