The Minnesota Commerce Department is in charge of trying to comply with the Minnesota Legislature’s direction that personal property exemptions and the homestead real estate exemption should be indexed for inflation every even year.  The new pronouncements from the Commerce Department for exempt property amounts as of July 1, 2026 are just out.  Last year Ken Edstrom wrote an article for the American Bankruptcy Institute Law Review concerning the mistakes made over the years by the Commerce Department in indexing Minnesota exemptions for inflation.  See, “Confusion and Uncertainty, the indexing of Collection Exemptions in Minnesota,” 33 ABI L.Rev. 167 (2025).
