We work in a difficult profession. The essence of our jobs is to solve other people’s problems. All too often, we set aside our own struggles, our own mental health, and our own to-do lists in order to help other people with their issues. Then we turn around and fight with another lawyer who is doing the same thing.

Public school book bans have long been part of American political culture as parents, teachers, administrators, and government officials battle over the content of classroom curriculum. Recent efforts by the St. Francis and Stillwater school districts to restrict student access to books are firsts in the state, and they raise important legal questions about the First Amendment as well as parental rights.

This is a story about acceptance and the miraculous effect it can have on one’s well-being. My challenging experiences over the past four years have guided me to focus more on health and wellness and my relationships with the important people in my life. I am hopeful that my story may be useful to others who might benefit from a similar change in perspective.
